Japanese Skincare Routine
Where K-beauty embraces layering, J-beauty (J-byuti) prizes elegance and restraint. The Japanese routine typically runs 4–6 steps with formulas built around water, ferments, and meticulous SPF.
1. Cleanse (oil + foam)
DHC Deep Cleansing Oil set the global standard. Follow with Senka Perfect Whip or Hada Labo Gokujyun Foaming Wash.
2. Lotion (化粧水)
Japanese 'lotion' is a hydrating liquid moisturizer, not a Western toner. Hada Labo Gokujyun Premium Lotion (hyaluronic acid) and SK-II Facial Treatment Clear Lotion are essentials.
3. Essence / serum
SK-II Facial Treatment Essence is the original pitera essence. Tatcha The Essence offers a modern luxury take.
4. Emulsion / cream
Lighter than Western moisturizers. Curel Intensive Moisture Cream or Shiseido Ultimune Power Infusing Cream.
5. SPF
Japan leads the world on sunscreen. Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence and Anessa Perfect UV are global gold standards.
Frequently asked
Is J-beauty better than K-beauty?
Neither is 'better' — J-beauty trades layering for refined single-ingredient formulas, K-beauty trades simplicity for innovation. Many ideal routines mix both.
