Skincare Routine Order

The rule: thinnest to thickest, water before oil. Actives go before moisturizer so they reach the skin; SPF is always last in the AM.

The canonical order

1. Cleanser. 2. Toner / lotion. 3. Essence. 4. Serum / ampoule. 5. Eye cream. 6. Moisturizer. 7. Face oil (PM only). 8. SPF (AM only).

Exceptions

Retinoids and prescription tretinoin go on dry skin before moisturizer. Vitamin C is best in the AM under SPF. BHAs need 10–15 min to settle before layering hydrators.

Frequently asked

Does the order really matter?

Yes — heavy creams block lighter serums from absorbing. Water-based actives first, occlusives last.
